Madonna con Bambino e due donatori, Annunciazione e santi
Jacopo di Cione·1360
Historical Context
This Madonna and Child with Two Donors, Annunciation and Saints by Jacopo di Cione, now in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, dates to around 1360. Jacopo was the youngest of the three Cione brothers (alongside Andrea/Orcagna and Nardo) who collectively dominated Florentine painting in the generation after the Black Death. The inclusion of donor portraits reflects the growing practice of commemorating individual patrons within sacred imagery during the late Trecento.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Jacopo's work displays the solid, monumental figure style of the Cione workshop, with clear outlines, restrained gestures, and a rich palette of blues, reds, and golds set against elaborately tooled gold grounds.
