Pianto di Davide
Lorenzo Lotto·1527
Historical Context
The Weeping of David by Lotto from 1527 depicts the king mourning, possibly for Absalom or another lost figure. David’s grief, expressed throughout the Psalms and narrative books, was one of the most emotionally complex subjects in the Old Testament, and Lotto’s empathetic treatment reflects his sensitivity to human suffering. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays nervous, charged atmosphere in portraits, symbolic objects placed with enigmatic purpose, eclectic absorption of influences from Germany, Raphael, and Giorgione, restless spatial invention.
Technical Analysis
Lotto renders the grieving king with characteristic emotional directness. The figure’s pose and expression convey genuine pathos without theatrical excess.
