Portrait de l'abbé Henri Grégoire by Jacques Louis David

Portrait de l'abbé Henri Grégoire

Jacques Louis David·1791

Historical Context

David's Portrait de l'abbé Henri Grégoire of 1791 depicts the Constitutional bishop who had led the campaign to grant civil rights to France's Jews in 1791 — one of the Revolution's most significant acts of emancipation. Grégoire's personal conviction that religious equality was consistent with Revolutionary principles made him one of the Enlightenment's most important moral figures, and David's portrait of him participates in the Revolutionary project's documentation of its founding principles through the likenesses of their most committed advocates.

Technical Analysis

The clerical collar and dark coat create the restrained visual vocabulary appropriate to a churchman of republican sympathies. David's drawing is precise and firm, the abbe's intelligent features captured with the analytical clarity that defines David's approach to male portraiture.
