Portrait of Oswolt Krel: "Sylvan Men" with Heraldic Shields of Agathe von Esendorf
Albrecht Dürer·1499
Historical Context
This panel is one of two lateral wings accompanying Dürer's celebrated 1499 portrait of Oswolt Krel, a Lindau merchant working for the Ravensburg Trading Company in Nuremberg. The wild men (Wilde Männer) flanking heraldic shields were a common motif in late medieval German heraldry, symbolizing untamed nature and noble lineage. Dürer painted these wings to frame the central portrait, incorporating the coat of arms of Krel's wife Agathe von Esendorf.
Technical Analysis
Painted in oil on limewood panel, the wild men are rendered with vigorous brushwork against a vivid red background. Dürer's precise draftsmanship is evident in the detailed musculature and foliage of the figures.
