La Fête foraine by Raoul Dufy

La Fête foraine

Raoul Dufy·1906

Historical Context

La Fête foraine, at the Kunsthaus Zürich, was painted in 1906 when Dufy was exploring the possibilities of a boldly colored, energetic brushstroke inspired by his encounter with Fauvism. The fairground—a subject beloved by French artists from Seurat to Toulouse-Lautrec—gave Dufy an occasion for capturing festive movement and color in a relatively loose compositional format. The Kunsthaus acquired it as part of a strong collection of early twentieth-century French painting assembled in the years around World War I.

Technical Analysis

The scene is organized through rapid, directional strokes of vivid color that describe figures and stalls without detailed delineation. Dufy's stroke here is energetic and varied in length, building visual excitement through the accumulation of marks rather than through precise description of the fairground's individual elements.
