Crucifixion by Altichiero

Crucifixion

Altichiero·1379

Historical Context

Altichiero's Crucifixion at St. George's Oratory in Padua (c. 1379) is among the most ambitious fresco-derived panel compositions of the late Trecento. Working in the tradition of Giotto but with a proto-naturalistic attention to crowd dynamics and spatial depth, Altichiero created a monumental scene that bridges the devotional intensity of Gothic art with early humanist observation. The work served the Lupi di Soragna family chapel and reflects the growing role of private patronage in northern Italian religious art.

Technical Analysis

Executed in tempera on panel with sophisticated spatial recession unusual for the period. Altichiero employs a dense, multi-figured composition with individualized faces and naturalistic gestures, moving beyond the formulaic arrangements of earlier Gothic Crucifixion scenes.
