Christ Carrying the Cross
Alvise Vivarini·1450
Historical Context
Christ Carrying the Cross, at Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, is one of the rare works by Alvise Vivarini that remains in situ—in one of the great Gothic churches of Venice. The painting depicts Christ under the weight of the cross on the way to Calvary, a devotional subject intended to engage the viewer in prayerful solidarity with Christ's suffering. Santi Giovanni e Paolo was the funerary church of the Venetian doges, and works placed there belonged to Venice's most prestigious ecclesiastical contexts.
Technical Analysis
Christ is shown in a three-quarter view, bowed under the cross's weight, his face turned toward the viewer in an expression of suffering that invites empathetic engagement. Alvise models the face with careful tonal graduation that shows the influence of Giovanni Bellini's softer, more atmospheric handling of flesh.
