Small Maestà
Ambrogio Lorenzetti·1337
Historical Context
The Small Maestà by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, painted around 1337, is an intimate version of the enthroned Madonna and Child surrounded by saints — a subject that defined Sienese civic devotion. Ambrogio, brother of Pietro Lorenzetti, was among the most intellectually ambitious painters of the Trecento, known for his innovative spatial experiments and allegorical programs. Now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena, this panel distills the grandeur of a large-scale Maestà into a concentrated devotional image.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera and gold on panel with Ambrogio's distinctive spatial sophistication, placing figures in a convincing three-dimensional arrangement unusual for the period. His modeling is softer and more volumetric than most Sienese contemporaries, reflecting knowledge of Giotto's Florentine innovations.
