The Oath of St Louis of Toulouse
Ambrogio Lorenzetti·1324
Historical Context
Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Oath of Saint Louis of Toulouse, painted around 1324 in the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena, depicts the Franciscan prince who renounced the throne of Naples to join the mendicant order. This early work by Ambrogio reflects the deep ties between Sienese artists and the Franciscan order, whose churches were among the most important patrons of Italian Gothic painting. Saint Louis of Toulouse, canonized in 1317 just seven years before this painting, was a particularly timely subject whose cult was actively promoted by the Franciscan order.
Technical Analysis
Executed in fresco on the basilica wall, the composition captures the dramatic moment of Louis's renunciation with the narrative clarity that would become Ambrogio's hallmark. The figures are arranged in a ceremonial grouping that balances formal dignity with the naturalistic gestures and expressions characteristic of the advanced Sienese Gothic style.
