Madonna and Child with Mary Magdalene and St Dorothea
Ambrogio Lorenzetti·1325
Historical Context
This early work by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, dating to around 1325, shows the Madonna and Child flanked by Mary Magdalene and Saint Dorothy, reflecting the devotional emphasis on female saints that was prominent in Sienese religious culture. Ambrogio, along with his brother Pietro, was among the most innovative painters of the Italian Trecento, pushing beyond the conventions inherited from Duccio toward greater naturalism and spatial complexity. The panel's presence in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena places it among the core holdings of Sienese Gothic art.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on panel with gold ground, this early work already displays Ambrogio's interest in volumetric modeling and spatial relationships between figures. The saints' faces show the naturalistic individuality that would become his hallmark, while the decorative gold tooling remains within Sienese convention.
