Augustine Altarpiece: Death of Saints Veit, Modestus and Crescentia by Master of the St. John's Altarpiece

Augustine Altarpiece: Death of Saints Veit, Modestus and Crescentia

Master of the St. John's Altarpiece·1487

Historical Context

The Master of the St. John's Altarpiece — likely a Nuremberg-adjacent South German workshop — produced this panel showing the deaths of Saints Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia as part of an Augustine or hagiographic altarpiece programme. The three saints were among the Fourteen Holy Helpers and their martyrdom under Diocletian was a standard subject in South German altarpiece cycles of the fifteenth century. The Augustine Altarpiece format, here apparently repurposed or misidentified, reflects the dense network of altarpiece production serving Bavarian and Franconian churches.

Technical Analysis

The Master deploys a crowded martyrdom composition typical of South German Gothic narrative painting: the three saints rendered with individual physiognomic distinction face their executors in a scene of concentrated violence. Landscape background with architectural elements opens behind the action. The palette is strong and saturated, with the red of martyrdom prominent in the chromatic scheme.
