Crucifixion
Andrea di Bonaiuto·1370
Historical Context
Andrea di Bonaiuto, also known as Andrea da Firenze, is best remembered for his monumental frescoes in the Spanish Chapel of Santa Maria Novella. This Crucifixion panel in the Pinacoteca Vaticana reflects the Dominican theological program that shaped much of his work, emphasizing Christ's sacrifice as the foundation of the Church's authority. Painted around 1370, it belongs to the mature phase of Florentine Gothic painting before the disruptions of the late Trecento plague years.
Technical Analysis
Rendered in tempera on panel with gilded background, the composition centers the crucified Christ with symmetrically arranged mourning figures. Andrea's style combines Giottesque volumetric modeling with the decorative linearism of the mid-century Florentine school.
