maestà coi santi g.battista e jacopo
Andrea di Bartolo·1394
Historical Context
Andrea di Bartolo's Maestà with Saints John the Baptist and James (c. 1394) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art continues the great Sienese tradition of the enthroned Madonna surrounded by saints, a format immortalized by Duccio's monumental Maestà of 1308-1311. Andrea, son of the prolific Bartolo di Fredi, was trained in the family workshop and became one of Siena's most active painters in the 1390s and early 1400s. His refined, conservative style represents the continuation of the Sienese Gothic aesthetic at a time when Florentine art was already moving toward early Renaissance innovations.
Technical Analysis
