San Francesco
Historical Context
This panel of San Francesco by the Master of Saint Francis, created around 1272, depicts the order's founder in the iconic standing pose that became standard in Franciscan devotional imagery. The Master of Saint Francis was likely the leading painter working in Umbria during the 1260s-1280s, a period of intense artistic activity driven by the rapid expansion of the Franciscan order. Now at the National Gallery of Umbria, this image served as a focus for devotion and as a visual model that influenced subsequent depictions of the saint across central Italy.
Technical Analysis
Rendered in tempera on a gold-ground panel, the work presents Saint Francis in a hieratic, frontal pose with the stigmata prominently displayed. The painting combines the strong linear definition and decorative patterning typical of the Master's workshop with a restrained expressiveness in the saint's face.
