St Mark
Bronzino·1525
Historical Context
This Saint Mark by Bronzino, painted around 1525 for the Capponi Chapel, represents an early work from the artist's formative period under the influence of his master Jacopo Pontormo. The Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita, Florence, is one of the most important Mannerist ensembles in existence, with Pontormo's famous Deposition as its altarpiece. Bronzino's contribution to this chapel decoration demonstrates how closely master and pupil collaborated during this period, before Bronzino developed his own distinctive, more restrained manner as court painter to the Medici.
Technical Analysis
The figure of Saint Mark shows the influence of Pontormo's emotional intensity and unnatural color harmonies, which Bronzino would later temper in his mature court style. The handling is more fluid and expressionistic than Bronzino's later porcelain-smooth technique, reflecting his early immersion in Pontormo's visionary Mannerism.
