Incoronation of the Virgin
Fra Angelico·1430
Historical Context
Fra Angelico's Coronation of the Virgin — showing Mary crowned by Christ in the presence of the heavenly court — was among the most glorious subjects in Christian iconography, representing the culmination of Mary's spiritual journey from earthly mother to Queen of Heaven. This version, probably painted in the 1430s, shows Fra Angelico deploying the full splendor of his palette — ultramarine blues, brilliant reds, sparkling gold — to create an image of celestial festivity. The Coronation subject carried specific devotional significance for the Dominican order to which Fra Angelico belonged, as the friars celebrated the seven joys of the Virgin with particular fervor.
Technical Analysis
The celestial scene is rendered with Fra Angelico's most brilliant palette, the assembled saints and angels creating a chorus of luminous color around the central coronation in a composition of ordered paradise.
