Portrait of Bianca Maria Sforza (1425-1468) by Bonifacio Bembo

Portrait of Bianca Maria Sforza (1425-1468)

Bonifacio Bembo·1460

Historical Context

Bonifacio Bembo's Portrait of Bianca Maria Sforza is among the earliest surviving portraits from the Sforza court of Milan, documenting the mother of Ludovico Sforza who would later commission Leonardo da Vinci. Bianca Maria Visconti, who married Francesco Sforza and consolidated the family's ducal succession, was a significant political figure whose portrait served dynastic commemoration. Bembo, who worked for the Sforza court in its foundational decades, developed a portrait style that combined Lombard precision with the dignity appropriate to ducal portraiture, creating images that established the visual conventions for Sforza dynastic representation.

Technical Analysis

Executed in Tempera on panel, the work showcases Bonifacio Bembo's skilled technique, with particular attention to the interplay of light across the sitter's features. The handling of drapery and accessories demonstrates the skill expected of formal portraiture.
