The Lover Crowned
Historical Context
The Lover Crowned is the culminating painting in the Progress of Love series at the Frick Collection, depicting the consummation of the courtship with the crowning of the successful suitor. The composition brings the four-painting cycle to its triumphant conclusion in a garden paradise. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The crowning gesture provides the compositional focal point, set within Fragonard's most elaborate garden composition. The golden light and profuse vegetation create an atmosphere of fulfilled romantic paradise.
