Grey Passion: Christ on the Mount of Olives
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder's Christ on the Mount of Olives is another panel from the Grey Passion cycle in Stuttgart. The Agony in the Garden, showing Christ praying while his disciples sleep, was one of the most psychologically complex Passion scenes, depicting the moment of Christ's human vulnerability before his arrest. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The grisaille panel uses the restricted grey palette to dramatic effect, with the contrast between the praying Christ and sleeping apostles conveyed entirely through tonal modulation and compositional arrangement.
