Grey Passion: Flagellation of Christ
Historical Context
Holbein the Elder's Flagellation of Christ is part of the Grey Passion at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The flagellation was one of the most physically violent scenes in the Passion narrative, and its depiction served both devotional meditation and penitential practice in late-medieval Christian culture. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The grisaille technique lends the flagellation scene a stark, sculptural quality, with the grey palette emphasizing the brutal action through form and shadow rather than the distraction of color.
