Antony and Cleopatra
Matthijs Naiveu·1750
Historical Context
Matthijs Naiveu was a Dutch genre and history painter who trained with Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris the Elder in Leiden. His Antony and Cleopatra from around 1750 places this most famous of ancient love stories — the Egyptian queen and the Roman general whose passion led to military disaster and double suicide — in the context of the fijnschilder tradition Naiveu inherited. Historical and mythological subjects were relatively uncommon in his output, which more typically focused on domestic interiors and tavern scenes, but the subject's combination of luxury, Oriental exoticism, and erotic charge had a natural appeal for the cabinet painting market.
Technical Analysis
The composition likely presents the pair in an opulent Egyptian or classical setting, rendered with the jewel-like precision of the fijnschilder tradition. The contrast between Antony's military bearing and the exotic luxury of Cleopatra's court would provide rich opportunities for Naiveu's meticulous detail rendering.
