Grey Passion: Entombment of Christ
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Elder's Entombment of Christ is another panel from the Grey Passion cycle at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The burial scene marks the transition from the active suffering of the Passion to the three-day period of Christ's descent into Limbo before the Resurrection. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The grisaille panel renders the solemn moment of burial in grey tones, with careful attention to the weight of Christ's body and the grief of the mourners, achieving emotional depth through tonal subtlety alone.
