Grey Passion: Resurrection of Jesus
Historical Context
The Resurrection of Jesus concludes Holbein the Elder's Grey Passion cycle at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The Resurrection scene marks the triumphant culmination of the Passion narrative, with Christ rising from the tomb in glory while the guards sleep or cower in fear. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The grisaille panel renders the supernatural event of the Resurrection within the series' restricted grey palette, using dramatic tonal contrasts to suggest the radiance of the risen Christ against the darkness of the tomb.
