La Tuilerie Saint-Henri by Raoul Dufy

La Tuilerie Saint-Henri

Raoul Dufy·1908

Historical Context

La Tuilerie Saint-Henri — the tile factory at the Saint-Henri district near L'Estaque — painted in 1908, is among the most explicitly industrial of Dufy's L'Estaque subjects. The tile kilns and factory buildings of the Marseille industrial periphery had none of the picturesque appeal of the bay views, but they gave Dufy forms of emphatic geometric mass suited to post-Cézannian structural analysis. The Musée Cantini's collection of 1908 Dufy works preserves this industrial subject alongside his more conventional landscapes from the same campaign, documenting the range of motifs he explored during this formative period.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas. Industrial architecture is rendered with simplified volumes — rectangular and pyramidal forms of kiln structures — treating the factory as a problem in geometric organisation. Colour is restrained to the local ochres and greys of the Provençal industrial zone, keeping the chromatic range factual.
