Usine à l'Estaque

Usine à l'Estaque — Factory at L'Estaque — painted in 1908, shows Raoul Dufy turning the Cubist-adjacent landscape around the Mediterranean port town into an industrial subject. L'Estaque had been made famous by Cézanne, who painted its rooftops and bay repeatedly from the 1870s, and in 1908 Braque and Dufy worked there under Cézanne's posthumous influence. Dufy's factory subject is unusual within his oeuvre — he would become far better known for regattas, racehorses, and seaside leisure — but it demonstrates his engagement with the structural analysis of the built environment that Cézanne had initiated. The Musée Cantini in Marseille holds several of his 1908 L'Estaque works.

Oil on canvas. The factory's angular forms are treated with geometric simplification, following Cézanne's influence in breaking industrial structure into interlocking planes. Dufy's palette at L'Estaque is more restrained than his later work — ochres, grey-greens, and blue — before his eventual turn to vibrant chromatic expression.
