giuditta e la fantesca abra con la testa recisa di oloferne
Historical Context
This Judith and the Servant Abra with the Head of Holofernes from around 1650 shows the aftermath of the beheading, with the two women carrying their grim trophy. The partnership between Judith and her maid was a recurring theme in Gentileschi's work. Artemisia Gentileschi's powerfully direct treatment of female subjects—heroines, saints, and biblical figures depicted with unprecedented psychological force and physical credibility—makes her one of the most significant figures in the Baroque tradition.
Technical Analysis
The paired female figures share the dramatic moment with complementary poses. Gentileschi's tenebristic lighting creates suspenseful atmosphere while the bold handling conveys determined action.
