Jeanne Fourmanoir sur le lac
Berthe Morisot·1892
Historical Context
Jeanne Fourmanoir was a young woman who modelled for Morisot in the early 1890s, appearing in a number of works from these final productive years. This lakeside subject from 1892 connects to the long series of water-adjacent figures running through Morisot's career — from early Bois de Boulogne scenes through to the garden and lake views of her last decade. The Mougins Museum of Classical Art, which holds this work, has assembled a notable group of nineteenth-century French canvases through private donations.
Technical Analysis
The lake surface provides a cool, reflective backdrop contrasted with the warmer tones of the figure's clothing. Her late technique is evident in freely overlapping strokes that define form through rhythm rather than outline.
