incoronazione della vergine, trinità, madonna col bambino e crocifissione
Barnaba da Modena·1374
Historical Context
This multi-scene panel by Barnaba da Modena, painted around 1374 and now in the National Gallery in London, combines the Coronation of the Virgin, the Trinity, the Madonna and Child, and the Crucifixion in a single devotional object. Barnaba was the dominant painter of Liguria and Piedmont, and his works were exported throughout the western Mediterranean, including to Sardinia and Corsica. The combination of multiple sacred subjects in one panel served the needs of private devotion.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Barnaba's distinctive style merges Byzantine iconographic formality with Gothic decorative richness, featuring elaborate gold tooling, deep jewel-toned colors, and a solemn intensity of expression in the sacred figures.
