Jean de Sedano et son fils en prière, avec saint Jean Baptiste ; face externe : Adam, nu
Gerard David·1493
Historical Context
This donor panel from a triptych depicts Jean de Sedano and his son at prayer, accompanied by St. John the Baptist, facing a now-separated central panel — a standard format for Flemish donor wings in which the patron and his family are presented to the sacred narrative by their intercessory saint. Gerard David was producing such panels throughout his Bruges career for the prosperous merchant community that sustained the city's cultural life. The exterior Adam nude — visible when the wing is closed — is exceptional, placing a figure outside the devotional program on the exterior wing face in a way more common in German than Flemish practice.
Technical Analysis
David's panel painting technique achieves the characteristic Flemish luminosity through built-up transparent glazes over a carefully prepared white ground. The figures' faces are modeled with the restrained refinement of his mature style — dignified, specific, and emotionally contained within the decorum of donor portraiture.
