Anbetung der Könige by Bartolo di Fredi

Anbetung der Könige

Bartolo di Fredi·1385

Historical Context

Bartolo di Fredi's Adoration of the Magi (c. 1385) at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena demonstrates the narrative exuberance of the late Sienese Gothic school. Bartolo was the most prolific Sienese painter of his generation, continuing the lyrical tradition of Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers while developing a more populist, storytelling approach. The Adoration subject allowed him to display his gift for courtly pageantry, exotic detail, and colorful processions that made his work widely popular across Tuscany.

Technical Analysis

Tempera and gold on panel with vivid, saturated pigments typical of Bartolo's palette. The composition features an elaborate cavalcade rendered with decorative richness, employing tooled gold halos and punchwork borders characteristic of the Sienese workshop tradition.
