Portrait of a Notable (or Gerolamo Casio)

Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio painted this portrait, possibly of Gerolamo Casio, around 1505 for the Uffizi Gallery. Boltraffio was Leonardo da Vinci's most accomplished pupil and an independent master of both devotional painting and portraiture in the Milanese tradition. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Portraiture in this period served multiple functions: documenting individual appearance, commemorating social status, and demonstrating the patron's wealth through the quality of the commissioned work.

The portrait demonstrates Boltraffio's refined Leonardesque technique with subtle sfumato modeling, atmospheric background, and the psychological depth that made his portraits among the finest produced by Leonardo's circle.
