Historical Context
Bartolomeo Vivarini headed the Vivarini workshop in Murano, one of the most productive painting enterprises in the Venetian territories during the fifteenth century. This madonna del cardellino was created around 1485 and is now held at the Museum Adriano Bernareggi The Madonna and Child was the most ubiquitous devotional subject of medieval and Renaissance art, present in every church and many private homes as a focus for prayer and spiritual contemplation.
