trittichetto con maestà e altre storie
Bartolomeo Bulgarini·1350
Historical Context
Bartolomeo Bulgarini's small triptych with the Maestà and narrative scenes represents the intimate devotional format that proliferated in Siena during the mid-fourteenth century. Bulgarini was a prominent Sienese painter active after the Black Death of 1348, carrying forward the legacy of the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini into the second half of the Trecento. These portable triptychs served private devotion, allowing the faithful to contemplate sacred imagery within domestic settings.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on panel with gold ground, this small-scale triptych features the delicate brushwork and jewel-like color that characterize Bulgarini's refined Sienese technique. The miniaturist precision in the narrative scenes contrasts with the hieratic formality of the central Maestà composition.
