Les Marionnettes
Historical Context
Les Marionnettes (The Puppets) at the Louvre Abu Dhabi depicts a puppet show, one of the popular street entertainments of eighteenth-century France. Puppet theaters were enjoyed by all social classes and provided artists with subjects that combined theatrical spectacle with social observation. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The animated scene captures the puppets and their audience with characteristic Fragonard energy. The warm palette and fluid brushwork create a sense of theatrical excitement and communal entertainment.
