The Execution of Saint George by Altichiero

The Execution of Saint George

Altichiero·1380

Historical Context

Altichiero's Execution of Saint George (c. 1380) at St. George's Oratory in Padua is part of the celebrated fresco cycle depicting the life and martyrdom of the warrior saint, commissioned by Raimondino Lupi di Soragna. The Oratory of St. George served as the Lupi family funerary chapel, and its decoration with scenes from the patron saint's legend reflected both dynastic piety and aristocratic self-presentation. Altichiero's treatment of the execution scene transforms a conventional martyrdom into a vivid, almost reportorial rendering of a public event, populated by individualized spectators and set within a convincing architectural space.

Technical Analysis

Fresco technique (not tempera on panel) with remarkable spatial depth and naturalistic crowd composition. Altichiero's mastery of perspective, individualized physiognomy, and atmospheric color creates a proto-Renaissance effect that anticipates developments of the following century.
