madonna in trono e santi
Bernardino Loschi·1520
Historical Context
Bernardino Loschi was a Reggio Emilia painter closely associated with the Pio family, the lords of Carpi, for whom he served as court painter. This Madonna in Trono e Santi — an enthroned Virgin flanked by saints — at the Castello dei Pio in Carpi was thus a work produced under direct Pio court patronage, likely for a chapel within the castle or a connected religious institution. The Pio of Carpi were humanist patrons of the arts who maintained a small but distinguished court, and Loschi's presence among them documents the role of local courts in sustaining Renaissance painting outside the major centers. The work follows the standard sacra conversazione format of northern Italian altarpiece production.
Technical Analysis
The enthroned Virgin occupies the central vertical axis in the conventional sacra conversazione arrangement. Loschi's Emilian training shows in the warm coloring and the careful attention to the gold throne and textile details. The saints' postures are restrained and devotional in character, following the Ferrarese-Emilian altarpiece tradition.
