Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803)

Sir William Hamilton was the British envoy to Naples whose volcanic observations contributed to early geology and whose collection of Greek vases transformed European understanding of ancient art. This 1801 portrait captures the diplomat-scholar in the final years of his life. Beechey, knighted in 1798 and portrait painter to Queen Charlotte, executed the work with his characteristic solid, dependable oil technique that documented Georgian society's ruling classes with honest directness.

The elderly diplomat is rendered with dignified naturalism, the composition reflecting the sitter's dual role as statesman and connoisseur.
