natività, angeli e il battista
Bernardino Loschi·1510
Historical Context
Bernardino Loschi's Natività, angeli e il Battista (Nativity with Angels and the Baptist), dated around 1510 and now at the Castello dei Pio in Carpi, connects the painter to the court of Alberto Pio, Prince of Carpi, who was one of the most cultivated humanist patrons of the early sixteenth century in the Po Valley. Loschi was one of the principal painters working for the Pio family, executing works for the castle that served both decorative and devotional functions within the court environment. The Nativity with the young Baptist present is a devotional synthesis that brings together the birth narrative with a prophetic reference to the future precursor of Christ. Castello dei Pio, now a museum in Carpi, preserves several of Loschi's works as documents of the Pio court's patronage of the local painting tradition.
Technical Analysis
The Nativity composition groups the holy figures in the traditional triangular arrangement around the Christ child with the young Baptist added as a devotional and prophetic presence. Angels complete the divine court surrounding the manger. Loschi's palette is warm and clear with Ferrarese influences visible in the precise figure style and careful rendering of devotional accessories.
