Venice. A View of the molo, looking west, with the Palazzo ducale and south side of the Piazzetta
Bernardo Bellotto·c. 1751
Historical Context
Venice: A View of the Molo from around 1751 depicts one of Venice's most iconic waterfront views. Bellotto painted this subject multiple times throughout his career, drawing on the vedute tradition established by his uncle Canaletto while developing his own more dramatic approach to light and atmosphere. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays crystalline architectural precision with stronger contrast and cooler color than Canaletto, documentary accuracy in rendering cities of Dresden, Vienna, Warsaw, and Munich.
Technical Analysis
The monumental Venetian architecture is rendered with precise perspective and the characteristic Bellotto combination of sharp detail and cool, silvery light.
