Altarpiece of Saint Martin - The Charity of Saint Martin
Master of Riofrío·1500
Historical Context
The Charity of Saint Martin depicts the foundational episode of Martin of Tours's saintly biography: the young Roman soldier who cuts his cloak in half to share it with a freezing beggar, and who that night dreams of Christ wearing the cloak's other half. This act of charitable generosity precipitated Martin's eventual conversion and episcopate, making it the most widely depicted episode in Martinian iconography. For the Altarpiece of Saint Martin at the Goya Museum, the Charity panel would have been among the primary narrative scenes, serving as the altarpiece's visual and devotional anchor.
Technical Analysis
Oil or tempera on panel. The Charity of Saint Martin requires two figures — mounted soldier and kneeling beggar — and the act of dividing the cloak. The horse provides visual grandeur appropriate to Martin's military rank, while the beggar at its feet creates the scale contrast that makes the charity visually legible.
