L'Atelier de la rue Jeanne d'Arc

Raoul Dufy maintained a studio on the rue Jeanne d'Arc in Le Havre early in his career, and paintings of this space represent a particular genre of artistic self-reflection — the artist's workspace rendered as subject matter. By the time Dufy was producing studio interiors, this was an established modernist theme connecting him to Matisse, Braque, and Picasso, who had all depicted their own studios as a way of reflecting on the relationship between art, space, and objects. Dufy's characteristically loose, calligraphic line and decorative color give even studio interiors an exuberant anti-gravity that transforms the workaday space into something festive.
