Historical Context
Biagio d'Antonio's Crucifixion fresco contributed to the Sistine Chapel's narrative cycle of Christ's life completed around 1482 under papal commission from Sixtus IV. The chapel brought together the finest Italian painters of the generation, and its decoration was designed to demonstrate papal magnificence while presenting a systematic theological program.
