Ceremonial Sitting of the State Council on 7 May 1901 Marking the Centenary of its Foundation

Ilya Repin's monumental group portrait commemorating the centenary of the State Council on 7 May 1901 is one of the most ambitious works of Russian realism. The painting records nearly a hundred government officials in the magnificent Mariinsky Palace hall with documentary precision, each face individually studied from life. Repin worked on it for two years with assistants, treating the task with the seriousness of a historical record. As Russia stood on the threshold of revolution, this image of the Tsarist administrative elite in full ceremonial splendour carried an unintended quality of final grandeur. The Russian Museum preserves it as a unique document of the ancien régime.

Repin organises the vast composition through the curved architecture of the hall, using the semicircular space to contain scores of figures without chaos. Each face is painted with the individual attentiveness of a standalone portrait. The warm golds of the uniforms and the deep reds of the room are rendered with rich, controlled impasto.
