Drei heilige Franziskaner, die in Marokko das Martyrium erlitten/ Die Heiligen Ludwig von Toulouse und Bernardino von Siena
Historical Context
The panel depicting Three Franciscan Martyrs of Morocco alongside Louis of Toulouse and Bernardino of Siena belongs to a Franciscan altarpiece commission for a Cologne church. The Moroccan martyrs — Berard of Carbio and companions executed by the Almohad sultan in 1220 — were the first Franciscan martyrs and were canonised by Honorius III in 1481, making their inclusion alongside the later Franciscan saints Louis and Bernardino a statement of the order's continuous martyrological tradition. The triple grouping of Franciscan saints was standard for altarpieces in the order's German churches.
Technical Analysis
The five figures are arranged in a hierarchical standing composition with Louis's bishop's mitre and Bernardino's IHS sunburst providing strong vertical and circular accents above the martyrs' humble brown habits. The master differentiates the figures through attribute and gesture rather than through strong individual characterisation.
