Predicació de Sant Feliu a les dones de Girona
Juan de Borgoña·1520
Historical Context
Juan de Borgoña was a major painter in the Spanish city of Toledo in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century, responsible for important fresco cycles in the Toledo Cathedral chapter house and in Avila. This panel depicting the preaching of Sant Feliu to the women of Girona was painted for Girona Cathedral, documenting the Catalan city's veneration of its founding martyr. Felix of Girona was an early Christian martyr executed in the city and is the principal patron of the diocese. Juan de Borgoña brought to this Catalan commission the Hispanicized Italian Renaissance style he had developed through contact with Italian models, creating a work that bridges Castilian and Catalan devotional art.
Technical Analysis
The preaching scene organizes the saint before an assembled group of women in a composition that balances the single figure of the preacher against the responsive crowd. Flemish-Italian hybrid technique gives the figures volume and the setting spatial depth. Warm Mediterranean coloring and architectural background situate the scene in a defined religious and civic context.
