Die heilige Ursula by Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder

Die heilige Ursula

Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder·1527

Historical Context

Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder's Saint Ursula presents the British virgin martyr with her arrow attributes and the retinue that defined her legend, here shown with the dignity and elegance characteristic of Cologne's finest devotional painting. Ursula's cult was centered in Cologne, where her bones and those of her companions were venerated in the Basilica of Saint Ursula, making this Cologne painter's treatment of the subject particularly appropriate as a local saint image. Bruyn's precise figure drawing and warm atmospheric quality give the saint an individualized presence that moves beyond generic saintly type toward the specificity of actual portraiture.

Technical Analysis

Bruyn's representation follows Cologne's rich tradition of Ursula imagery, with the saint depicted in elegant attire and portrayed with the detailed, polished technique that made Bruyn the preeminent painter of the Rhenish school.
