Sir Henry Goodricke, 6th Baronet by Martin Archer Shee

Sir Henry Goodricke, 6th Baronet

Martin Archer Shee·1790

Historical Context

Sir Henry Goodricke, 6th Baronet, appears in this 1790 portrait from Shee"s early career, when the young Irishman was establishing himself in the competitive London portrait market. The Goodricke baronetcy, based in Yorkshire, was an old-established family, and this commission represents the kind of minor gentry clientele that sustained Shee before he attracted grander sitters. The painting dates from just two years after Shee"s arrival in London from Dublin.

Technical Analysis

This early work shows Shee"s style still developing, with a somewhat stiffer handling than his mature portraits. The composition follows standard conventions of late eighteenth-century male portraiture—three-quarter length, plain background, restrained color. The influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds is evident in the warm tonality and the attempt at grand-manner dignity, though Shee"s technique at this stage lacks the fluency he would achieve in the following decade.
