Le Geôlier
Jacques Louis David·1794
Historical Context
David's Le Geôlier (The Prison Guard) of 1794 depicts an unidentified prison guard in a quickly observed likeness during the period when David himself was briefly imprisoned in the Luxembourg. The work is among his most informal and spontaneous portraits — a small study of a man doing his job, observed without social pretension or compositional elaboration. The painting provides a unique documentary glimpse of Revolutionary Paris's penal system from the perspective of a prisoner who retained enough privilege and artistic equipment to continue working.
Technical Analysis
The rough, unfinished quality of the painting reflects the conditions of its creation. David worked with limited materials in prison, producing a portrait whose looser handling and darker palette contrast with the polished finish of his public commissions.
