Parable of the Sower
Historical Context
Bruegel painted the Parable of the Sower in 1557, one of his earliest surviving paintings based on a biblical subject from the Gospel of Matthew. Christ's parable about seeds falling on different types of ground was a subject with particular resonance during the Reformation, when debates raged about the nature of faith and salvation. Bruegel sets the scene in a vast Flemish landscape with the tiny figure of the sower nearly lost among the terrain.
Technical Analysis
The composition demonstrates Bruegel's early panoramic landscape style with a high viewpoint and vast atmospheric distance. The river landscape recedes through carefully modulated tones, with the small sower figure integrated into the natural setting rather than dominating it.
