Christ as Savior
El Greco·1610
Historical Context
El Greco's Christ as Savior of around 1610 depicts Christ with the blessing gesture and the orb of the world in the Salvator Mundi image type — the most direct expression of Christian soteriology in visual form. El Greco painted numerous versions of the Savior throughout his Toledo career, each exploring different aspects of the tension between Christ's human face and his divine office. The blessing hand and the world held in his grasp create a composition of the simplest possible devotional impact, the direct gaze establishing the personal encounter between viewer and Savior.
Technical Analysis
El Greco renders Christ with his most expressive late technique, using luminous flesh tones and large, compassionate eyes to create an image of divine presence rendered with characteristic spiritual intensity.
